One such sponsorship collaboration is with local runner Jamie Barnett…

Jamie Said…

“I started running in 2013 at the age of 15, and there are two reasons why I started. I was inspired by watching Mo Farah in the London 2012 Olympics, and then I also used to go and watch my Dad run races like The Great West Run, and the Torbay Half Marathon. I remember seeing Kairn Stone win The Great West Run. It really interested me, and made me want to do the same.”

“What motivates me in running is my personal goals. I was 14 years old when I saw Mo Farah win his double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m at London 2012. At the time I wanted to be a footballer, but watching him in the Olympics changed that. I decided that I wanted to become an Olympian. That is my Number 1 goal in running, and is the main thing that keeps me training hard, as there is no way it will happen unless I work for it. Obviously that is going to take a good few years yet, so I have to set short term goals to gradually work my way there. I started out wanting to run 5k and 10k, but over time I’ve come to realise I’m better on the roads, and I will be focusing on Half Marathon and Marathons. My short term goals are to run under 1:10 for a Half Marathon and try to break the British Junior Record for the marathon which is currently 2:23:28. These are what I want to achieve by the end of 2018. My long term goals are to run under 1:03 for the Half Marathon and under 2:10 for the Marathon. I would like to represent England and Great Britain in major championships, and also race in the elite field at the World Marathon Majors. The New York Marathon is a particular favourite of mine that I want to compete in at the front of the race one day! I estimate that these long term goals could take 10 years of training from now, so I have plenty of mileage to be tallied up!”

From a young age Donald has always been a club level swimmer…

Donald Said…

With this swimming background, when I turned 14 I started playing underwater hockey which, over a 20-year period, saw me competing at an international level at multiple European and World championships within the GB Elite and Masters teams.

After coming back from the Underwater Hockey World championships in 2012, wining a bronze medal with the GB Master’s team, I fancied a new challenge. London had just hosted the Olympics, Bradley Wiggins had just won the Tour de France and Britain was gripped by sport, in particular cycling, so I borrowed a friend’s road bike and started exploring the hilly roads of south Devon. I really enjoyed the freedom cycling gave me and the ability to explore and get around under my own steam.

After a couple of years of cycling I was eager to compete. I wanted to make the most of my swimming background so entered the local Exe Valley Sprint triathlon, this was completely new to me having only previously competed at Aquathlon (swim/run). I swam well, rode ok and hung on during the run to finish in a respectable 14th place. I got lots of good feedback from other competitors and felt that I could have strong potential in triathlon and I was hooked.

I’ve now been racing triathlon for around five years, solidifying myself in the last two years as one of the very best age-group athletes in the world across multiple distances and gaining recent media coverage from the likes of Tri247 and British Triathlon. The highlight to date was winning the 2017 World Championships for my age-group in Rotterdam and continuing this succes in 2018 by winning the European Championships across all age-groups for both Sprint and Standard distances. These performances have enabled me to be selected to compete at an Elite level across the UK.

To compete at this level I train twice daily, along with being a husband, dad to two young children, and working full time. My spare time is very limited and not very flexible, this is where Craig really helps, being mobile he is able to work around my hectic schedule in order to treat me, which enables me to maximise my recovery and training.

Throughout my triathlon career I have been plagued with injuries which are mainly caused from running. I partly put this down to my late start to running and inefficient technique, however I also have hyper flexible ankles due to my years of swimming and playing underwater hockey. Craig has helped me overcome many of my injuries through his deep tissue massage and experience as a former Elite runner. He has excellent knowledge and can offer constructive and sensible advice.

I am looking forward to working closely with Craig during 2019, concentrating on injury prevention and helping me to achieve my goal to win both Standard Distance and 70.3 half Ironman World age-group titles in the same year. An ambitious challenge but one that I feel is within my grasp with continued commitment and support.’
